Ninja Unicorn: Coloring Sheets for Makerspaces

Short Story: A wonderful 6th grade student & I teamed up and made this bookmark sheet and I want to share it with you.


I made copies and gave several to the creative young kid. Then, a few days later, one of my marvelous teachers Mrs. Granger, had her kids, including the boy who helped create the Ninja Unicorn, color it and we’re going to laminate it. I took a picture and was just amazed. My not so adroit drawings and rather amateurish lettering were brought to life  and made to look better by the amazing coloring of the kiddos.

Why not ask some of your kids to come up with their own coloring bookmarks?  If you do, please share them with me and I will share them with my kids. Maybe we could trade them!?

Longer Story: This coloring sheet came about by mistake. It came about because I’m kind of a doofus.

We were madly getting
ready for MAP testing deadlines (going through each and every laptop) and
also worrying over so many snow related school delays, that I forgot to sign up for a pot-luck breakfast for our district
Library Media Professional Development day.

So, I made this bookmark. The ninja unicorn came from my cool 6grade Mr. J G.
Whilst GJ (me) tried my best to trace and ink the coloring bookmark.
These drawings feature 2 ninjas holding books not weapons. Dewey call
number. (I still dig Dewey!) a Ninja Kitty….and yes, a Ninja Unicorn!

I also created a bookmark template that you can go to GSuite and make a copy. I hope this will inspire kiddos to be creative & create their own bookmarks.

Black History Month

For Black History Month my DEN class did some coloring featuring the Sports Legend Jesse Owen, we assembled a curated display of books, and we decorated the Media Center Doors. Check it out!

 

Did I happen to mention that among my many talents, decorating doors sadly guilty by absentia?! Yeah. But I keep trying!

Thanks to the Teacher Resource Center of Howard County Public schools I was able to make these posters! I know some schools (mostly ELEM) have these, but we don’t and it was super going over to Old Cedar Lane to create these for our kiddos!

 

Viking it and Liking It!

Ms. Taylor created this really fun and informative presentation about Viking Mythology. All 7th grade Social Studies classes came into the Library Media Center to enjoy this history rich Prezi-tation.

PS. Like the look? Ms. Taylor is wearing a hand-sewn Viking Apron dress, glass beads, and a Celtic Belt  & Dragon woven bracelet from Crafty Celts – as seen on the History Channel’s hit TV Show the Vikings! Want to play Viking? Then you might want to join the SCA! I was in the SCA for years and years and had to find a good home for all my feast gear, Amber, Crafty Celt jewelry, and a six foot hand-forged copper spear. Ms. Taylor was the perfect person to “pay it forward” and gift it to!

When I joined SCA, several kind people, friends from my Barony,  gifted jewelry to me, helped me sew my first garb, and basically showed me the ropes! (That’s the SCA for you!) Ms. Taylor doesn’t need any tutoring to be a killer Viking, but what Viking could turn down free plunder & spoils? Oh and we decided to not bring the 6 foot spear out for the middle schoolers! Because. Lawsuit! LOL Kidding!

Last year I blogged about how the 7th grade team rocked this amazing interactive museum, display of student artwork & projects, and haunted house experience! This year it was even better! Partly because Amazon was watching & Amazon cares about kiddos!


Out of the blue I got a direct message or DM on Twitter saying that they had seen my blog post There’s an Echo in our Library with our Vine videos about our Library Amazon Echo & wanted to invite us to participate in as special Haunted House Campaign. Since we were planning to do the Poe Museum again anyway we jumped on board & were so grateful that they gave us some smart home products & decorations to add to our experience in exchange for this post, some Tweets, Vines, & Instagrams (which we woulda done anyway!) We embrace total Tech transparency here at MHMS, so it was a total Win/Win! W00t!

Edgar Allen Poe Lives on at MHMS!

The 7th grade team came together to create a super engaging and interactive Edgar Allen Poe museum last week!



In the words of 7th grade Team Leader, Mrs. Kristin Cullison:

“We created the Poe Museum to showcase our students’ hard work and creativity with their Research Projects about Edgar Allan Poe.  It came to life when Mrs. Smith was listening to Mrs. Cullison explain the project to students and pictured this fun and interactive way to display their projects.  We wanted to create a memorable experience for our students.  We also wanted to help them gain a better understanding of Poe’s life and how it influenced his famous short stories and poems.“

Vine Video Summer Book Trailers

Every year I get excited to share with my kiddos the Summer Reading List and to generate new ways to catch their interest in reading over the break. This year we decided to create video book trailers using the Vine App! 6 second videos that loop with sound. No editing needed just creativity!  See what we did embedded below along with our downloadable Howard County Public School System and Howard County Public Library Middle School Summer Reading List! Summer2014MiddleSchool Reading List PDF  We wanted a fun, easy way to share video book trailers! With so many of our computers being used for testing, and knowing how long editing takes on iMovie, Vine sounded like the perfect solution! With the added benefit of easy stop action filming built into the App means that kids can experiment and be super creative!
